About Kolhapur Cancer Centre

Kolhapur Cancer Centre (KCC), a 105 bedded hospital was established in 2003 by a very proficient, dedicated and focused young professional Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Suraj Pawar, with a vision of building a Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre providing cancer treatment & services to the patients under one roof.

After receiving his training from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, USA, Dr. Suraj Pawar followed his inner urge to practice in a region with a rural backdrop and serve the neediest cancer patients, for whom treatment was not easily accessible and ensuring that the quality of treatment for these patients is not compromised.

Dr. Suraj Pawar was an Executive Committee Member for ISDE (International Society for Disease of the Esophagus), IASO (Indian Association of Surgical Oncologists) and AMASI (Association of Minimally Access Surgeons of India)

Dr. Suraj Pawar has been bestowed with the prestigious award of “Healing hands in Cancer” & was recognized by the Central Minister Hon. Mr. Nitin Gadkari, for his service towards cancer patients with the rural backdrop and who are economically compromised.

Supported ably by Dr. Reshma S. Pawar, Executive Director, Kolhapur Cancer Centre (KCC) soon had trained their staff in acquiring the right skill sets & expertise to operate a world-class cancer care facility.

Today Kolhapur Cancer Centre (KCC) is a leading name with comprehensive cancer care under one roof in South-West Maharashtra. Along with Kolhapur, patients from Satara, Karad, Sangli, Miraj, Konkan and interior parts of Maharashtra, Goa & North Karnataka have benefitted from the treatment services. Kolhapur Cancer Centre (KCC) has broken the geographical boundaries in successfully treating patients from cross-country borders.

Kolhapur Cancer Centre (KCC) takes care of almost all aspects of Cancer Care primarily from Prevention, Cancer Awareness creation, Screening programmes, Cancer Diagnosis, Cancer Treatment Viz. Surgery, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, etc. to patient Rehabilitation. These services are provided by fully equipped, departments like Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Hemat- Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Onco-pathology, Onco-Anaesthesia, Pain and Palliative care & Immuno-therapy amongst others, with the accurate diagnosis & best possible treatment with the intention to cure has been KCC’s forte.

In Radiation, very advanced therapies like Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery(SRS), stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), the two linear accelerators have helped in precise therapy with less side-effects & revolutionized radiation therapy as a whole.

With an aim of spreading awareness about cancer, thus helping in early detection & management of this life-threatening ailment, as an initiative of team KCC, Chatrapati Shahu Cancer Research Foundation (CSCRF), a charitable organization was founded in August 2005. The main focus is on creating cancer awareness amongst the rural population of South Western Maharashtra, North Karnataka and Goa and making provisions for treatment that would be either free or at a highly subsidized cost.

Our NGO Chhatrapati Shahu Cancer Research Foundation along with many government plans & concessions helps to provide treatments at Kolhapur Cancer Centre for the economically compromised class of patients. Articles for cancer awareness are published regularly, along with conducting camps with audio-visual presentations on a regular basis. Providing funding & facilities for cancer research has been on fore-front for this organization.

Kolhapur Cancer Centre (KCC) has grown from a small hospital into a Tertiary Cancer Care Centre over a span of 12 years. Kolhapur Cancer Centre has successfully treated more than 42,000 cancer patients; performed more than 25,000 successful cancer surgeries, more than 20,000 Chemotherapies, more than 12000 Radiation therapies and 20 Bone marrow transplants till now. Several of these are landmark surgeries at National and International level.

Approximately 42,000 patients have undergone treatment at Kolhapur Cancer Centre till date. Of these, 80% of the patients have received free treatment with the help of CSCRF and various Government Schemes. The main purpose of starting Kolhapur Cancer Centre viz. “Paying back to Society” seems to be on way of being achieved.
