Understanding PET-CT: The Gold Standard in Oncology
A PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography) scan is a powerful dual-imaging tool that has revolutionized modern cancer care. While a standard CT scan provides a detailed map of your body’s anatomy (structure), the PET component reveals the metabolic activity (function) of cells.
At Kolhapur Cancer Centre, we use this “hybrid” technology to identify cancer cells that are often invisible to traditional X-rays or MRIs. By seeing how cells “behave,” our oncologists can distinguish between healthy tissue and active tumors with pinpoint accuracy.
The KCC Advantage: Why Choose Our PET-CT Center?
Unmatched Sensitivity :
Our advanced scanners detect even the smallest metabolic changes, ensuring early-stage detection when treatment is most effective.
Reduced Radiation Dose:
We utilize intelligent software that delivers crystal-clear images while minimizing the patient’s exposure to radiation.
Comprehensive Support:
Our Nuclear Medicine team works hand-in-hand with KCC’s surgical and radiation oncologists for a unified treatment plan.
What to Expect: Your PET-CT Journey at KCC
- Preparation & Injection Upon arrival, a small amount of a radiotracer (typically FDG) is administered. This is a glucose-based liquid that cancer cells naturally “thirst” for.
- The Resting Phase You will rest in a quiet, comfortable room for about 45–60 minutes. This allows the tracer to circulate and be absorbed by high-metabolism areas.
- The Scan The actual scan is painless and typically takes 20–30 minutes. You simply lie still on the scanner bed while the machine captures images from multiple angles.
- Results & Consultation Our expert Radiologists and Nuclear Medicine specialists analyze the data. The results are then discussed in our multidisciplinary tumor board to decide your next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is the scan safe?
Yes. The amount of radioactive tracer used is very small and has a very short half-life. It is naturally flushed out of your system within a few hours. We recommend drinking plenty of water after your appointment.
How should I prepare?
Patients are usually required to fast for 6 hours prior to the scan and avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Our team will provide a detailed instruction sheet specific to your medical history.
